The "retail optimizations" are important to consider when looking at the load time test today. Our early reference design and the HP EX use the same flash, and same controller - from a hardware view - the software is different.
When finally released, SMEN drives will be faster than retail products shipping today. The E12 is the fastest game load drive from Phison to date. It's slightly faster than the E7 series that shipped almost exclusively with 15nm planar TLC memory. The E8 that succeeded the E7 is a value-focused mainstream 4-channel controller so Phison hasn't had a new high-performance product to compare to the E12 in two years.
The PCMark 8 standard storage test uses ten typical applications to test the storage system. We present the combined results in throughput to gauge performance across a broad range of applications. The HP EX is also slightly faster. In the extended storage test using the same applications, we focus mainly on the recovery phases.

These are the usage model closest to a consumer workload coming from the initial hit of installing the operating system and applications, like when you first build and deploy a new system.
We've mentioned that the two next-generation drives take a different approach to achieving high performance. When you put a heavy emphasis on cache, the heavy workload performance falls lower, but the consumer-focused workloads see a greater improvement. Phison prefers to use more processing power to handle background activities rather than cache. The result is higher performance under heavy workloads, but slightly less performance under less intensive workloads.
We've watched this play out for a number of product generations. The workload focuses on light office activities with very little data written during the test. The Phison E12 reference design gets much closer to the baseline score but is still delivers a very snappy user experience.

Benchmarks for consumer testing are also benchmarks with a fresh drive so, not only can we verify that manufacturer specifications are in line but also, so the consumer can replicate our tests to confirm that they have an SSD that is top-notch. We even provide links to most of the benchmarks used in the report. These patches have a slight detrimental impact on 4K read and write performance, thus if you are SSD savvy like us, you will start to notice slower expected speeds. So, just keep this in mind when looking at the numbers in the tests that follow and comparing them to previous review results.
This Test Bench build was the result of some great relationships and purchase; our appreciation goes to those who jumped in specifically to help the cause. We have detailed all components in the table below and they are all linked should you wish to make a duplicate of our system as so many seem to do, or check out the price of any single component.
As always, we appreciate your support in any purchase through our links! We prefer to test with easily accessible software that the consumer can obtain, and in many cases, we even provide links. Our selection of software allows each to build on the last and to provide validation to results already obtained.
Crystal Disk Info is a great tool for displaying the characteristics and health of storage devices. It displays everything from temperatures, the number of hours the device has been powered, and even to the extent of informing you of the firmware of the device. From what we can see so far, it supports a working temperature sensor and many of the popular SMART attributes we like to see. This includes total host reads and writes counters, as well as a few others.

Corsair H Dark Power Pro 11 W. Silent Wings 2. Samsung Pro. Samsung EVO.The Destroyer is an extremely long test replicating the access patterns of very IO-intensive desktop usage. A detailed breakdown can be found in this article. Like real-world usage, the drives do get the occasional break that allows for some background garbage collection and flushing caches, but those idle times are limited to 25ms so that it doesn't take all week to run the test.
These AnandTech Storage Bench ATSB tests do not involve running the actual applications that generated the workloads, so the scores are relatively insensitive to changes in CPU performance and RAM from our new testbed, but the jump to a newer version of Windows and the newer storage drivers can have an impact.
The average latency regression is due to degraded read latency, while average write latency has actually improved, though not to the point of being competitive with other high-end NVMe SSDs. The 99th percentile read and write latencies are both worse for the SMEN than for the HP EX, but the write latency is clearly the bigger problem with a larger overall value and a more significant regression. There are two package designs. The image also shows the larger SMEN controller, which will also come in two options.
ADATA Announces XPG Gammix S11 Pro: SM2262EN, 3D TLC, Up to 3.5 GB/s
The SM will feed the upper mainstream market with a high-performance option. Were it available today, the SM would be a competitor to Samsung's series.
That won't be good enough to compete for the performance crown inthough. The EN uses the same physical silicon but has different programming and firmware. Just how fast is the SMEN, you ask? That's enough to match the fastest PCIe 3. The SM non-EN shouldn't be glossed over. This controller already produces Pro-like performance as a working prototype. SMI didn't disclose the number of processor cores in each model, but we suspect the physically smaller SM series features less processing power.
This series most likely uses a dual-core processor, whereas the SM uses a quad-core processor. The SM series splits into two distinct parts. There is a latency penalty with this technology, but it's much less than you would expect. It looks like Intel and SMI's other partners will have several options to choose from, and the new entry-level standard will increase nearly 2x in real-world performance.

Apparently, it's really really hard to build SSD controllers that keep up with Samsung controllers judging by all the reviews that come through Tomshardware.
When I hear that Silicon Motion is designing a Samsung killer, it's hard to believe. It would be great if that were the case though. Awesome new device! Good to have competition! You can also use a ordinary SSD drive as L2 level cache, to enlarge cache size. The potential for a better user experience is there, but you have to have the workload to take advantage of the performance.
The SX Pro gives us that sweet 18, random read performance so right out of the box users will benefit. In real-time, that's maybe a second or two shaved off a game load screen but it's not like we count the seconds that tick by when a game loads. You will notice a more responsive experience when opening applications, opening folders, and doing just about everything that reads from the boot drive.
You don't have to hunt for applications that benefit from the high random reads. If you goal is to increase performance in multimedia functions, like our example of using IMG Burn to change the file type of a movie, the high queue depth 1 and 2 performance will increase as well.
This is really one of the fastest drives we've tested for general computing other than anything with Intel's Optane technology.
That said, this is still not a perfect choice for workstation use.
The Silicon Motion SM2262EN SSD Controller Preview: Good And Bad Amplified
The Silicon Motion NVMe controllers continue to increase heavy workload performance, but it's not there yet. You do have to write a lot of data, more than what I normally write every day, to see the performance drop off. I'm not complaining! The 1TB model is only a few dollars more than the model it replaces but will have to compete with for a limited time. The price difference is so close on the 1TB models that we don't even differentiate the two.

So what is a user or system builder to do if they need a drive with SLC-like performance all the time?
For a while, the answer to that has been MLC drives, but with MLC slowly but surely on its way out as well, other solutions are needed. The Kingston KC is a new high-end consumer M. Kingston had been neglecting this market segment for a while, but the two year old KC has finally When high performance alone is not enough to impress, RGB lights are here to help.
